Heavy Metals Cleanse

Over the past 50 years human exposure to heavy metal toxins has risen dramatically. Each day we are exposed to some kind of heavy metal toxin whether it is the air, the water we drink or the food we eat.

Chronic exposure to these dangerous toxins come from the mercury-amalgam fillings we get from our dental visits, lead in paint and tap water, chemical residues found in processed foods and toxins in personal care products, among others.

Certain professions are also at higher risk for mercury exposure including anyone in the dental occupation, laboratory workers, hairdressers, painters, printers, welders, metalworkers, cosmetic workers, battery makers, engravers, photographers, visual artists and potters.

While some people have the ability to excrete these toxins out of their system, others, particularly those suffering from chronic conditions, are not so lucky and develop a build-up of metals called heavy metal toxicity. Further, heavy metals can accumulate in your body over time, causing symptoms you might not equate with heavy metals.

In many cases, the symptoms brought on by metal toxicity are often misdiagnosed for chronic conditions such as autism, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression and multiple sclerosis.

Symptoms of Heavy Metal Toxicity
There are two types of heavy metal toxicity: acute and chronic. Symptoms of acute toxicity are easy to recognize because they are usually quick and severe in onset. The symptoms include:
• Cramping, nausea, and vomiting
• Pain
• Sweating
• Headaches
• Difficulty breathing
• Impaired cognitive, motor, and language skills
• Mania
• Convulsions

Chronic exposure, on the other hand, produces different symptoms, which can be easily confused with symptoms of different illnesses. Some of the symptoms are impaired cognitive, motor, and language skills, learning difficulties, nervousness and emotional instability, insomnia and nausea.
In fact, because toxic metals block the absorption and utilization of essential minerals, this in itself can set up a whole cascade of symptoms that gradually get worse over time.

Below is a more specific checklist of symptoms of metal toxicity poisoning:
• Chronic pain throughout the muscles and tendons or any soft tissues of the body
• Chronic malaise — general feeling of discomfort, fatigue, and illness
• Brain fog — state of forgetfulness and confusion
• Chronic infections such as Candida
• Gastrointestinal complaints, such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, heartburn, and indigestion
• Food allergies
• Dizziness
• Migraines and/or headaches
• Visual disturbances
• Mood swings, depression, and/or anxiety
• Nervous system malfunctions — burning extremities, numbness, tingling, paralysis, and/or an electrifying feeling throughout the body

Arsenic, Lead and Mercury: A Potentially Deadly Heavy Metal Toxin Combination
The most common heavy metals that can be harmful to your health in large amounts are aluminum, cadmium, arsenic, lead, and mercury with the last three contributing to the most cases of heavy metal toxicity.
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) confirmed this when they compiled a Priority List for 2001 called the “”Top 20 Hazardous Substances.”" The first three heavy metals to appear on their list were arsenic, lead and mercury.

Some debate exists as to exactly what constitutes a “”heavy metal”" and which elements should properly be classified as such. Some authors have based the definition on atomic weight, others point to those metals with a specific gravity of greater than 4.0, or greater than 5.0. The actinides may or may not be included. Most recently, the term “”heavy metal”" has been used as a general term for those metals and semimetals with potential human or environmental toxicity. This definition includes a broad section of the periodic table under the rubric of interest.

Regardless of how one chooses to define the category, heavy metal toxicity is an uncommon diagnosis. With the possible exceptions of acute iron toxicity from intentional or unintentional ingestion and suspected lead exposure, emergency physicians will rarely be alerted to the possibility of metal exposure. Yet, if unrecognized or inappropriately treated, heavy metal exposure can result in significant morbidity and mortality. This article provides a brief overview of general principles in the diagnosis and management of metal toxicity. The Table reviews the typical presentation of the most commonly encountered metals and their treatment in summary form. It is not intended to guide clinical decision-making in specific cases.

Many of the elements that can be considered heavy metals have no known benefit for human physiology. Lead, mercury, and cadmium are prime examples of such “”toxic metals.”" Yet, other metals are essential to human biochemical processes. For example, zinc is an important cofactor for several enzymatic reactions in the human body, vitamin B-12 has a cobalt atom at its core, and hemoglobin contains iron. Likewise, copper, manganese, selenium, chromium, and molybdenum are all trace elements, which are important in the human diet. Another subset of metals includes those used therapeutically in medicine; aluminum, bismuth, gold, gallium, lithium, and silver are all part of the medical armamentarium. Any of these elements may have pernicious effects if taken in quantity or if the usual mechanisms of elimination are impaired.

Chelation Therapy and Heart Disease

Heart Disease and Chelation Therapy

A study is called double –blind, if neither the patients nor the doctors know who received the medication and who received placebo, to avoid psychological effects of expecting the drug to work. This kind of study is the scientific gold-standard to figure out whether a drug works or not.

The patients in the JAMA-study were asked to sit on an exercise bike while having an electrocardiogram (ECG) done at the start and end of the 27-week study. The time it took from the start of the exercising to the time point when the patient’s ECG showed signs of ischemia, which is oxygen deficiency in the heart, was measured. The patients were also asked to fill out a quality of life questionnaire at the start and end of the study. After 27 weeks, no difference was found between the placebo and chelation-therapy group.

It is, however, possible that there are benefits of chelation therapy, but the benefits are too small to be detected in this relatively small study. For that reason there is currently a large study underway, funded by the National Institutes of Health that involves 2372 patients over 50 years with coronary artery disease. This study is large enough to be able to conclusively show whether chelation therapy has any small or moderate effects on this disease.

Natural mechanisms and techniques that one could employ in the lead detoxification process include antioxidation, herbs, and dietary fiber.

Anti-oxidation

Some very common sources of antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E. Besides vitamins, antioxidants are present in various herbs like aloe vera, garlic, ginger, green tea, and cilantro. Certain essential amino acids, glycine and selenium and zinc are also rich sources of anti-oxidants.

The anti-oxidants present in these vitamins, minerals, and herbs, help destroy disease-causing free radicals and also eliminate lead from the human body.

The human body cannot produce these antioxidants or vitamins that contain these antioxidants, hence they have to be consumed or supplemented. Vitamin C, for example, is found in citrus fruits like oranges and by including fresh orange juice or lemon juice into the diet one can ensure one has a good supply of antioxidants that helps strengthen the immune system, fight diseases, and eliminate lead toxins from the human body.

Chelation Therapy and Heart Disease

Heart Disease and Chelation Therapy

What evidence is available for its efficacy or lack thereof?

Many chelation therapists report that their patients feel better and show better heart function after therapy. There are also numerous reports of patients who claim they owe their life to this miracle drug. Can these claims be substantiated scientifically or are they due to the lifestyle changes that usually accompany the therapy or the expectation of the patient that a therapy that costs $3000-5000 and that is not covered by any insurance, has to be doing some good?

In the 1960, scientists have done a small study with 30 patients. However, two patient died during the study and there was no benefit seen for the 28 others, so the study was stopped prematurely.

In 2002, a study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA 2002;287:481-486). In this study, 84 coronary artery disease patients were followed for 27 weeks. It was a double–blind, placebo-controlled study, i.e. one group of patients received the I.V. chelation therapy, and the other half of patients received just IV fluid without EDTA in it (placebo).

Chelation Therapy and Heart Disease: The Cons

The American Heart Association does not recommend using chelation therapy as a general heart disease treatment. Other cons to using chelation therapy as a heart disease treatment include:

* Lack of scientific evidence. Research does not support the use of chelation therapy as a safe and effective heart disease treatment.
* Expense. Patients pay for chelation therapy out of their own pockets. A single treatment may cost up to $125, not including the costs of diagnostic tests, physician fees, or nutritional supplements recommended by the doctor providing the treatment.
* Inadequate care. People using chelation therapy to treat heart disease may delay seeking conventional medical treatments that have been proven to help coronary artery disease.

In addition, there are several possible side effects associated with chelation therapy, including:

* A burning or stinging sensation at the delivery site
* A loss of important nutrients, requiring vitamin and mineral supplementation
* Risk of death and other health complications, such as kidney failure and low blood pressure.

Chelation Therapy: Current Research

As with many alternative medicines, chelation therapy is still being investigated. The National Institutes of Health is currently conducting a large clinical trial to find out whether chelation therapy is helpful for people with heart disease.

Chelation therapy has also been proposed as a treatment for schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, autism, cancer, and many other conditions, but there is no research supporting the use of chelation to treat these health concerns.

Before considering chelation therapy for heart disease or other illness besides heavy metal removal, arm yourself with as much information as possible and talk it over with your doctor.

Chelation Therapy and Heart Disease

Heart Disease and Chelation Therapy

What is chelation therapy?

Chelation therapy is the intravenous infusion with an artificial amino acid called ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic-acid or short EDTA. The therapy has been developed in the 1940s as a therapy for heavy metal poisonings like e.g. with lead, or mercury, as EDTA can bind heavy metals. The heavy metals that are bound to the EDTA can then be safely excreted by the kidney. This therapy is also used for cases of radiation poisoning in which radioactive substances were accidentally ingested.

As it was recognized that atherosclerotic plaques contain calcium in the 1960s, a hypothesis was formed that EDTA, which can also bind calcium, might be able to dissolve existing atherosclerotic plaques or at least prevent their formation und thus prevent the progression of existing atherosclerosis.

The therapy today consists of 5-30 session of an intravenous (I.V.) infusion of EDTA that takes about 2-4 hours in the first month. 30 sessions is the most common regimen. Most patients are recommended to return for once monthly follow-up treatments. The therapy is also usually accompanied by life-style changes like smoking cessation, better nutrition (less saturated fats, more fruit and veggies, vitamin supplements), regular exercise and an attempt to lose weight.
